Gyogi Skills - Tiny Tigers: Class & Uniform Outline
Gyogi means well-behaved / good sport! Gyogi is a term to use when someone does something that contributes positively to their community - DO YOU GYOGI?
Gyogi skills is an amazing age-specific karate-influenced program that focuses on physical, social, and behavioral skill development while helping foster a healthy self image. Your child will learn valuable skills that can ensure a successful transition into a more traditional martial arts program and team / individual sports as they grow older with expanding interests. Our program introduces your child to their first martial arts experience in the most positive, fun, and encouraging way possible - classes are inspiring, educational, and safe!
You may recall from your initial studio tour when you enrolled that a child in our Tiny Tiger age group will advance through the "Shiro" belt ranks - Shiro means White. These are the White belts with two colored stripes that run along the entirety of the belt. These belts identify this age group separately from the others due to the age-specific curriculum they will rise through. Students this age learn more foundational movements and danger awareness concepts that help lead them closer to the next age level's more mature and traditional martial arts / self defense program. The more traditional and technical aspects of Martial Arts training are quite challenging and only appropriate for children who have gained a solid foundation of skills like balance, coordination, and control. So by using the foundational techniques of martial arts combined with our specific behavioral skills curriculum we created our unique Shiro-skills program to help your child get the best start possible!
Our program will keep your children working through social, physical, and behavioral challenges in every class. Kicks and punches are the most identifiable traits of Martial Arts training, but there’s more. The mental element of Martial Arts teaches focus, attention, and concentration – present in every class. The physical part of Martial Arts teaches balance, coordination, strength, and agility – present in every class. The spirit of Martial Arts teaches self-esteem, positive attitude, belief, and a disciplined respectful attitude – present in every class. Combining these classical Martial Arts traits with our practical and energizing curriculum provides the best results!
Gyogi Martial Skills - Class and Uniform Outline

Group Class: Classes are 45-minutes in duration. This is the most productive amount of time that allows a child of this age group to learn, exercise, and enjoy their training without overwhelming them. Each class is broken into time-specific sections: 10m warm up and mat-chat, 15m skill drills, 10m Kempo-Karate fundamentals, 5m stripe review, 5m game. The skill drills section is where each of the 8 skill topics will appear in class and rotate throughout the 13-week cycle. The material section is where they will learn and practice rank-required material.
Private lessons: Private lessons are designed for personalized skill improvement and progress review and are often best maximized with a partner (or two) of like personality and ability. Privates are approximately 30 minutes in duration and are broken into specific timed sections depending on rank. Private training always help a student improve in troubled areas more quickly to ensure maximum progress. Additional private training sessions are available and can be scheduled at your request.
Uniform: Upon enrollment students are provided a White uniform and belt, a Level 3 logo patch, and a Level 3 T-Shirt. Blue or pink uniforms may be purchased at anytime to be worn as an optional color - Uniform colors may be mixed together. Full uniforms are only required for special events like testing but can also be worn for every class. During typical class training students can wear a Level 3 shirt tucked into their uniform pants and belt without the uniform jacket.
Progressing to the next level!
There are 8 skill sets each student will continuously develop as they advance in rank: focus, teamwork, control, memory, balance, discipline, fitness, and coordination.
The 8 skill sets are taught individually so that a student training two times per week will work on all 8 skills over a course of four weeks.
Students must earn all 8 skill-stripes on their belt, as well as memorize martial arts techniques, before they are eligible to test for the next belt. When they are eligible they will be awarded a test invitation to join us for this exciting opportunity!
The testing cycle is roughly 11 - 12 weeks. 10 weeks to cover each skill set two times with 1 - 2 weeks of review to ensure proper development before testing. The skills are challenging and students of this age are also required to learn the names of specific movements, which may happen sooner or later than expected.
As each student earns their new belt they will proceed to earn all 8 skill-stripes again based on the next level of requirements per the testing outline.
If your child “ages out” before completing the Shiro belt levels, they will join the next age group, and automatically be eligible to test for their Sukiru-Yellow belt, which begins them officially into the Children's Sukiru (ages 7 - 9) curriculum.
The Shiro belt rank colors are White, Yellow, Orange, Purple, Blue, Green, Brown, Red, and Black.
Students who graduate this program are considered knowledgeable in the above mentioned skills, therefore are eligible to move into the next more mature level of training - Children's Sukiru Martial Arts Skills!
Your role as a Gyogi Parent!
Your role as a Gyogi Parent is just as important as that of a Sensei! Your child's development starts with you. Here are a few examples and ideas of encouragement of how you as a parent support our community of skill and behavioral improvement here at Level 3 Martial Arts Performance:
Consistency: Your child may not yet be aware of the days of week or even the time of day but their body knows consistency. Showing up to the same place at the same time at the same frequency will start them on a path of learning, growth and success - it creates a normalcy and expectedness of which a personal home routine can be built around.
Etiquette: Assuring your child is in the proper uniform, clean and damage free, shows we value the activity in which we are part. We definitely understand this age group can wreak havoc on their clothing which is why you can always purchase additional uniforms and shirts to save on laundry effort! However, your student isn't just a reflection of themselves, or you, but also our company as a whole. We take great pride in our personal performance, which includes personal image. Attendance: To ensure maximum productivity in each class our Tiny Tiger roster is capped at what we view a manageable number (subject to personalities enrolled). It's rare a child drops out of this program which makes the limited spaces valuable. So please attend your classes regularly (except when ill of course). If you are absent frequently without prior notification we may ask you to pay forward your child's spot to another potential student on our Gyogi Martial Skills reservation list (yes, we actually have one).
Code of Conduct: The L3MAP Code of Conduct hangs in the lobby near the Dojo entrance for all students, parents, and visitors to read. It describes how to behave in the Dojo when training and in the lobby when spectating. It also reminders students of proper image and etiquette. Two of the more important items we need parents’ help with are: 1) Help your child prepare for class by using the restroom upon arriving to the studio. But also stay local in case your child needs help using the restroom during class or for any other reason, and 2) We encourage you to socialize with other parents in our lobby but keep conversation noise down and electronic devices on mute.
Lobby safety: The lobby isn't a play area so please don't let children bang on glass, throw toys, climb on the seating or anything else that isn't meant for climbing. You will be politely reminded of this if needed. It's important that all visitors in our lobby are comfortable and safe.
Parking lot safety: Please park in a designated parking spot to drop off and pick up your child - DO NOT STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DRIVE PATH LEAVING YOUR CAR UNATTENDED OR TO ALLOW YOUR CHILD TO WALK THROUGH THE LOT ALONE! We'd rather you be 5 minutes late, happy, and safe then the alternative. Also, don’t park in front of the other businesses in our building unless also supporting those businesses. We’d rather you walk a minute to the studio and be late to class if it means preserving convenient parking for our neighbors’ customers. This helps us maintain an excellent relationship with them as well.
At-Home Student-Parent Practice Ideas
Periodically we ask parents to join their children’s lessons to help foster respect and keep parents connected to their child’s progress. But you should participate with your child at home too! Below are some skills you can practice at home to give your child the best opportunity to rise through the ranks (hey, we also have an amazing adult program by the way - parents get a free month and uniform, ask us if we haven't asked you already). FOCUS: Stand approximately five feet away from the student and toss a soft object like a rubber ball, small pillow, or bean bag to them and have them punch or kick it out of the air.
TEAMWORK: Have them hold their hands out and up and have them lead you through punches by counting to ten.
CONTROL: Have them learn how to raise their voice with confidence and strength to a stranger when saying "You're a stranger - GO AWAY".
MEMORY: Give them two or three step commands like "jump, punch, sit".
BALANCE: Have them practice kicking in the air five to ten times without setting their foot down.
DISCIPLINE: Have them practice following a command the right way the first time you ask.
FITNESS: Have them hold a push-up position for 10 seconds without wiggling.
COORDINATION: Have them respond to left and right commands with their hands and feet.
